Applied Research of Using Remote Sensing Technology to Investigate Alpine Meadow Grassland Resource and Degradation

Landsat TM image,Spot image and field investigation data of 1985 and 1997 were usedto study the grassland resource and degradation in Jianshe township of Dart County. image interpretation and data GIS processing show results as follow; 1). Image interpretation can distinguishbetween degraded and non - degraded land; 2). It can not distinguish between dune erosion andgullies erosion and other kind form of degradation; 3). It do distinguish the three basic naturalvegetation classes as Alpine Meadow, Alpine Shrub and Alpine Marsh; 4). The managed vegetation area can only be distinguished when it is large enough and major changes happened; 5).Satellite image and remote sensing show a great potential on grassland resource investigation,planning and management.
