Intelligent design of separation columns

To realize the computer based design of separation columns, the process of separation column design by human designers was analyzed. The main characteristics of the design process are the hierarchical strategy and the application of various types of knowledge. An object oriented problem decomposition architecture was proposed. The basic elements of the architecture are the classes called “designer” which represent the column design at various levels. The hierarchical decomposition is implemented with the sub designers as the data members of their super designers. The architecture is both the knowledge storage and the problem solving mechanism. It is able to represent and utilize different types of knowledge and is more suitable for the hierarchical design than the conventional rule based system. An intelligent separation column design system was developed with this new architecture.
