Constitutive model for soil with strain softening behavior and its application in boundary value problems

A constitutive model is developed for soil with strain softening behavior based on triaxial test results for dense sand. The model agrees with FEM results for a hollow cylinder with saturated dense sand, which was first isotropicaly consolidated, then applied a gradually increased inner pressure. The analysis shows that all the hollow cylinder elements almost simultaneously begin to strain soften and the hollow cylinder displays overall failure behavior. The results contribute to further understanding of the deformation and failure of soil and provide data for determining the bearing capacity of soils.
