Total cost and energy cost of wind turbine generation systems for low wind speeds

The cost of energy(COE) of a wind turbine generation system(WTGS) can be reduced by proper design of the rotor blades to improve the economics for low wind speeds.This study analyzes three systems with the same power rating and different blade lengths.The annual energy production of each system was calculated for different wind conditions,with the total system cost estimated using empirical formulas.The results show that the system COE decreases with the average wind speed and a system with longer blades has no economic superiority in a region with strong winds.However,the annual system energy production is greatly improved by increasing the blade length for low wind speed conditions.The total system cost will increase,but the energy cost will still be reduced.The energy cost can also be reduced by reducing the optimal tip-speed ratio or by increasing the blade power coefficient.The study shows the feasibility of improving the economic benefit of a wind turbine generation system by proper selection of the blade length,optimal design of the airfoil or the application of new materials.
