Study of SMES to improve dynamics of power system

Active and reactive power in power system can be independently controlled in 4 quadrants using superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). SMES is an ideal installation for improving dynamics of power system. The principles of SMES and independent control of active and reactive power were studied. Relationship between AC side and DC side was established. Its control system is separated into two parts: internal control and external control. The function of improveing dynamics was simulated using EMTDC software. The simulation results prove that SMES is effective to improve generator damping. However, it is also showed that its function is limited by installation location.
