Experimental and computational studies on ductility of reinforced concrete shear walls

Relations between ductility of the reinforced concrete shear wall and its relative depth of compressive zone of concrete section (or ratio of compressive stress to compressive strength of concrete), confinement of boundary zones, and aspect ratio were studied. Experimental results of ten shear wall specimens with relative depth of compressive zone of 0.061 to 0.443 were briefly introduced. A computational method for curvature ductility of shear walls with confined boundary zones was established. The calculated ductility ratios are in good agreement with the experimental results. Using the established method, factors influencing the ductility of shear walls were studied. It is concluded that to make the shear walls have expected ductility, the relative depth of compressive zone of concrete section should be limited and confined boundary zones must be provided.
