Simulation on the Relation between the Subsurface Temperature Anomaly in Western Pacific and ENSO by Using CGCM

Zhou Guangqing and Li Chongyin (State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Science and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029)  
The ENSO-like interannual variability in the tropical Pacific was simulated by a coupled general circulation model of the tropical Pacific Ocean and global atmosphere. The analysis of the model integration showed the close relation between the temperature anomalies in the sea surface in eastern-central Pacific and in the subsurface (100~200 m) in western Pacific. There is warm anomaly in the subsurface in the western pacific warm water pool prior an half or one year to the El Nino in eastern Pacific, and then it propagates eastward. It is reverse for La Nina.
