LIU Sai-xiong(Energy Engineering College,Xiangtan University,Xiangtan 411105)
H.G.Wells was one of most important Edwardian novelists.Tono-Bungay is the representative of Wells' social satire novels.Tono-Bungay was depicted vividly and incisively the best commodity bubble in the consumer society. It shows readers the confusing times of money and merchandise worship, which embodies two main characters.Firstly,it was passionate language for advertising that promoted business opportunities in consumer's psychology of alienation, thus bringing marketing success with this counterfeit drug-"Tono-Bungay".Secondly,the capital upstart Edward made conspicuous consumption to highlight his noble status, while humble Marion exchanged the power for luxurious consumption through the marriage.
