Segmentation algorithm of license plate characters based on template matching and vertical projection

License plate recognition is an important technique in intelligent transportation system, while license plate character segmentation is one of the key points of vehicle license recognition. In this paper, an improved algorithm of license plate character segmentation is presented. Firstly,an image filtering algorithm based on variable thresholds is introduced. The improved algorithm combines vertical projection and template matching and focuses on dealing with some adverse factors of license plate in real life.This has not only improved the adaptability of license plate under different environment, but also enforced the anti-interference ability. The experimental results show that this algorithm is easy to implement and achieves better effect in character segmentation, which is favorable for the character recognition in next step.
