The interdecadal shift of summer precipitation and atmospheric circulation over East China and its relationship with PDO

By using the monthly precipitation data from 160 observational stations of China during1951-2013,the monthly mean NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and global monthly mean Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data from NOAA,the interdecadal shift and related atmospheric circulation variation of summer precipitation over eastern China were investigated.Results show that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) had two interdecadal shifts in the mid and late 1970 s and the late 1990 s.The former one caused the further weakening of East Asia Summer Monsoon (EASM) and the southwarding moving to the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze Rive of summer rain belt.On the contrary,the latter one led to the recovery of EASM,so that the summer rain belt can be moved northward to the reaches of Huai River.The further study finds that the atmospheric circulation of East Asia has changed dramatically after the PDO shift in the late 1990 s,moreover,the warming over Lake Baikal and the eastward and northward moving of West Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH) are the possible causes for the interdecadal precipitation change.
