ON THE DYNAMICS OF OROGRAPHICALLY PRODUCED FINITE PERTURBATIONS IN A BAROCLINIC WESTERLIES

CHAO JIH-PING (Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology,Academia Sinica)  
It is shown that the large-scale orographically produced perturbationsin a frictionless,adiabatic and baroclinic atmosphere can be described by athree dimensional Helmholtz's differential equation.The perturbations of westerlies due to the Tibetan Plateau and RockyMountains are computed.The numerical results shows that the positions oftroughs and ridges in the westerlies are well in agreement with the obser-vation,but there is discrepancy in intensity.Further that the perturba-tions are damped rapidly with in(?)reasing height.
