THE CONTINENTAL MARGIN SPREADING OF SOUTH CHINA SEA AND THE CYCLE OF EVOLUTION OF MARGINAL SEAS

Liu Zhaoshu Yang Shukang He Shanmou Huang Ciliu Chen Serqiang (South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica)
Based on the main geologic structural features of the South China Sea, we suggest a viewpoint of "continental margin spreading", which comprises the following: the mantle wriggled and spread out towards the Ocean; the continental margin became dismembered by faulting; seafloor spreadings took place along the axes in various directions during different periods; ard the continental blccks or island blocks spread out only towards the ocean.Besides, the graben system of the continental margin formed by continental margin spreading and the cycle of its development, as well as its model have also been proposed. The graben system of the continental margin is composed of a series of grabens which differ from one another in distinct mechanism, crust and continental blccks or island blocks between them. The whole process from the "formation of sea as a result of continent pulling ard spreading" to the "formation of continent as a result of seafloor compression" constitutes a full sequence of evolution and, under certain conditions, it has the following evolution, tension graben with continental crust; tension graben with transitional crust (both continental and oceanic crusts) ;shear-tension graben with oceanic crust; compression graben with transitional crust (both oceanic and continental crusts); shear-compression graben with continental crust; and compression-secondary tension graben wtih continental crust.Corresponding to the evolution tendency of the graben system of the continental margin, the evolution of the marginal sea basins may be divided into 6 development stages. 1. embryonic stage; 2. young stage; 3. mature stage; 4. ageing stage; 5. old stage and 6. extinct stage.
