FRACTURE AND BLOCK-FAULTING STRUCTURE OF SOUTH CHINA SEA

He Shanmou (South China Sea Institute of Oceanology,Academia Sinica)  
The faulting stracture of South China Sea includes the fault systems of Tethys collisional continental margin of Indosinian episode, Cathysian active margin of Yanshang episode, and East Asia spreading margin of Himalayan episode. The latter includes the South China Sea marginal graben fault system and the Taiwan-Philippine trench-arc fault system.South China Sea is a marginal graben block bounded by crustal faults. According to crustal type and fault depth,the block may be further divided into shelf continental block,slope transitional block, and central basin oceanic block.The extension process is relatively mild in the continental block, forming small-scaled block-tilting structures and controlling the generation,migration, and enrichment of hydrocarbon.In the transitional block,the extension of faults is significant, for ming extensional blocks,fracture-separated blocks, and drift blocks. The extension is the most intense in the oceanic block, resulting in multi-episodic and multi-axial sea-floor spreading and the formation of oceanic crust.
