STUDIES ON POPULATION BIOLOGY OF Bostrichthy sinensis LECEPEDE (Periforms, Eleotridae)I . Differentiation of morphological characters

Biological characters in Bostrichthy sinensis Lecepede were analysed and compared for a total of 244 individuals collected from four ocalities. Nianshan of Weidong county, Xixiang of Baoan county, Xinxu and Min-an of Zhanjiang during April and May. The relationship between standard body length and body weight is as follows. W = 0.01204 × L3.2088. There is no significant difference in the composition of age and sex among populations. The proportion of if and T stage of gonad in Xixiang population is higher than the others, since this sample was collected in early season of breeding. The number of first dorsal spine ranges from F to Vll with a majority of IV.The second dorsal-fin ranges from I -10 to I -12 with a majority of I-11. The anal-fin ranges from I-8 to I-10 with a majority of I -9. These meristic characters are inadequate to become the criteria for population identification. Using discriminant function analysis and principal component analyse, morphometric measurements indicate that differentiation of external morphological characters either within or between populations is not significant and has no gaps in spite that these four populations are in a range of tens to hundreds of km.
