Influence of wave-induced stress on upper current in South China Sea during a typhoon process

To estimate the effect of the wave-dependent drag coefficient on the simulation of storm current induced by typhoon Faith 1998,two numerical simulation cases, with and without considering the wave-dependent drag coefficient respectively, were performed using a three-dimensional ocean model POM.The results of these two models were compared and verified by buoy observation data.A preliminary analysis showed that the wave-dependent drag coefficient could improve the performance of POM when simulating a moving storm,both the maximum SST decrease and the inertial oscillation current induced by typhoon Faith agreed better with observation with consideration of wave-dependant drag coefficient than without it. The minimum SST was roughly 1℃ lower,reaching to 24.12℃,and the maximum velocity of the surface current increased roughly by 17 cm·s-1,reaching to 1.74 m·s-1.The barotropic current velocity up to 1 000 m depth increased roughly by 32% and reached to 16.2 cm·s-1.
