Comparisons of Shade Tolerance Parameters of 8 Tropical Grasses

Characteristics of photosynthesis response to light,and the leaf content of chlorophyll in 8 tropical grasses were measured to analyze the shade tolerance capability.These grasses included Paspalum atratum Swallen cv.Reyan No.11,Stylosanthes guianensis(Aublet) Swartz cv.Reyan No.2,Panicum maximum Jacquin cv.Reyan No.8,Pennisetum purpureum Schumacher×P.glaucum(Linnaeus) R.Brown cv.Reyan No.4,Brachiaria dictyoneura(Figari et de Notaris) Stapf cv.Reyan No.14,Brachiaria ruziziensis Germain et Evrard cv.Reyan No.15,Arachis pintoi Krapovickas et Gregory cv.Reyan No.12 and Stylosanthes guianensis(Aublet) Swartz cv.Amarillo.The objective of this study was to seek shade tolerant grasses which can be grown in tree plantations such as rubber plantations in tropical China.The results indicated that there was a significant difference in light compensation point,apparent quanta efficiency,light saturation point,maximum photosynthetic rate,dark respiration rate,chlorophyll-a,chlorophyll-b and chlorophyll-a+b.According to these results and our field experiences,B.dictyoneura cv.Reyan No.14,P.maximum cv.Reyan No.8,A.pintoi cv.Reyan No.12 and S.guianensis cv.Reyan No.2,are recommended to plant in the forest plantations like rubber plantation.More research should be done to exploit the light utilization characteristic of P.purpureum×P.typhoidum cv.Reyan No.4 for its wide adaptation to light.
