THE VARIATION CHARACTERISTICS OF HAINAN-INFLUENCING TROPICAL CYCLONES ACTIVITY OFF RAINY SEASONS

Analyzing Hainan-influencing North-West Pacific Tropical Cyclones’ climate characteristics off the rainy seasons(October to next April) by using 54 years of typhoon data from 1949 to 2002,we have the following preliminary results: TCs Influencing or seriously influencing Hainan have no notable decrease off the rainy seasons during the 54 years.There exist obvious periods of quasi-10 years and 15-20 years in the variation of those TCs’ annual frequency,and decadal variability was small from mid-1950s to late 1960s,during late 1970s and late 1990s but was great during early-1970s and 1980s.Strong TCs that seriously influence Hainan mainly appear in La Nina years.There also exist obvious periods of quasi-10 years and 15-20 years in the variation of the intensity of the TCs.The decadal variability is small from mid-50s to late-60s,during late 1970s and during 1990s,but being larger during early-70s and during 1980s;Stronger TCs(with center pressure lower than 940hpa) generate on the ocean surface east of 135oE;the more westward they generate,the weaker they are.The location the TCs land in Hainan during off-rainy seasons are all on the east coast,shifting south after mid-1970s and the landing TCs all appeared as typhoons afterwards.
