STUDY ON THE CHARACTER OF HAZE WEATHER PROCESS FROM THE YEAR 2001 TO 2008 OVER THE PEARL RIVER DELTA

Based on the data from 466 surface automatic weather stations across the Guangdong province,conventional data from the Guangzhou Weather Observatory,and Guangzhou air pollution indexes from the years 2001 to 2008,serious haze processes and cleaning processes occurring in 2001 to 2008 have been identified and analyzed under a set of unified statistical standards.Weather patterns and surface airflow and their effects on serious haze processes and cleaning processes have also been studied by using meteorological analytical methods and vector sum analytical methods over the Pearl River Delta region(PRD).The results are shown as follows.(1) Low visibility was closely correlated with air pollution,especially complex pollution.(2) The haze processes or cleaning processes from 2001 to 2008—picked up according to the indexes of atmospheric visibility and air pollution—were mostly in the same season,but at different time.(3) The typical haze processes often happened from October to April.High pressure was the primary influencing weather pattern.The typical cleaning processes often happened from October to March when the cold air appeared in high frequency and from May to September when there was significant precipitation.Cold air and typhoon activity were the corresponding primary influencing weather patterns.(4) The vector sum analysis shows that the regional serious haze processes were related to the regional breeze processes which often resulted in the appearance of stagnant regions,and the cleaning processes were related to strong advection transport.
