The data of daily lightning in Jiangmen city during 2008—2011 based on a lightning detection and location system are used to analyze relevant statistics,factors and the abrupt change of sequences.The results of the study are shown as follows.The total lightning number best represents the physical quantity of lightning frequency.The total lightning number best represents the lightning frequency and the pentad and monthly variations of the total lightning number and daily lightning hours represent the characteristics of these variations as well as convective activity.We can diagnose the onset time of the South China summer monsoon through analyzing the abrupt change of total lightning number in pentad sequences,and predict the starting time of flood seasons in Jiangmen region through the sudden increase of daily lightning hours.
