Objective To investigate the curative effects of the ginseng and astragalus combination on Pneumocystis carinii induced pneumonia(PCP)in rats. Methods An experimental rat model of Pneumocystis carinii induced pneumonia was established. The rats were immunosuppressed by a quantitative subcutaneous injection of dexamethasone with a dosage of 1 mg per time per rat, twice a week, for 8 weeks. And the model rats were randomly divided into 5 groups:Chinese herb treated group, prevention group, western medicine treated group, and the control group of the PCP model.Another control group of normal rats was also included in the experiments. The curative effects were analyzed by the survival rates, weight, counting the number of cysts, and pathological changes of lung tissues. Results The survival rates of the Chinese herb treated group is higher than the control group of the PCP model, but is lower than the control group of normal rats. The weight and the number of cysts of the Chinese herb treated group are lower than the control group of the PCP model. In addition, the lung inflammatory response in the Chinese herb treated group and the prevention group were lower than that of the control group of PCP model. Conclusion The ginseng and astragalus combination is effective in the therapy of PCP of rats through improving the immune respones.
