An Experimental Study on the Influence of Total Flavone of Radix Puerariae on Bone Density and Bone Calcium in O- variectomized Rats

Objective: To observe the mechanism of total flavone of Radix Puerariae(TFRP)for preventing osteoporosis. Methods: 60 SD female rats were allocated to 6 groups randomly (each groups 10 rats) . Other than the sham - operation group, the other 5 groups were ovariectomized to establish osteoporosis model. TFRP water solution 50mg ·kg-1 was given to the low-dosage group; 100mg ·kg-1 to the medium - dosage group; 200mg·kg-1 to the high -dosage group; livial 1. 25mg·kg-1 to estrogen group; gastric perfu-sion of distilled water to sham - operation and control group. After 3 months, the weight of bone, bone density and content of bone calcium of rats in various group were determined. Results: In the low -, medium - and high - dosage TFRP groups, sham - operation and estrogen groups, the weight of right femur, bone density of left femur and bone calcium content of right femur were compared with control group, the differences were significant(P 0. 01). Conclusion: The TFRP can effectively prevent osteoporosis in female rats, its mechanism may be related the effect of estrogen.
