Objective To observe the effect of rectal administration of herbal prescription of Qianlie'an Suppository(Prostant)on secretory immunoglobulin(SIgA)in prostatic fluid of chronic prostatitis(CP)patients, and to explore the immune mechanism of herbs with actions of clearing heat, draining dampness, and removing blood stasis for CP patients. Methods A prospective double-blind randomized controlled trial was carried out in 40 CP patients. The patients were equally randomized into two groups:the treatment group received Prostant and the control group received placebo. The changes of scores of prostatic symptoms, white blood cell count and SIgA content in the prostatic fluid were observed in the two groups. Results The symptom dimension score and the total symptom score were obviously improved in the treatment group after treatment(P0.05 compared with those before treatment),but the improvement was not obvious in the control group after treatment(P0.05).The improvement of the above indexes in the treatment group was superior to that in the control group(P0.05).The number of white blood cells in the prostatic fluid was decreased in the treatment group after treatment(P0.05 compared with those before treatment),but the decrease was not obvious in the control group after treatment(P0.05).The decrease of white blood cell number was obvious in the treatment group as compared with that in the control group after treatment(P0.05).SIgA content in the prostatic fluid of the two groups at low level increased but that at high level decreased after treatment(P0.05),and the changes of SIgA in the treatmentgroup after treatment were obvious as compared with those in the control group(P0.05).Conclusion Rectal administration of herbal prescription of Prostant has a bidirectional regulation on SIgA content in the prostatic fluid of CP patients, indicating that herbs with actions of clearing heat, draining dampness, and removing blood stasis can regulate the focal immune function of the prostate.
