Research Progress in PbWO_4 Crystal with High Light Yield

YE Chong-zhi,YANG Pei-zhi (Shanghai Institute of Ceramics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Shanghai 200050,China)  
Lead tungstate(PbWO_4)is becoming one of the most promising scintillators due to its favorable scintillation properties such as high density,short radiation length,high radiation hardness and fast decay time. But the application of PbWO_4 crystal is limited to high-energy physics because of its low light yield. Thus the study of PbWO_4 crystal with high light yield is paid considerable attention to develop its applications in medium and low energy such as PET detector. The recent development of PbWO_4 crystal with high light yield is reviewed,and some problems at present are pointed out in this paper. Based on the theoretical analysis and comparison of the different growth techniques,a modified Bridgman method for growing PbWO_4 crystal,together with ion doping and optimal annealing condition are proposed to improve its light yield.
