Analysis of a Hydrodynamic Face Seal with Circular Grooves onto Its Surface

A mathematic model was set up to get film pressure between two faces of a hydrodynamic mechanical seal with circular grooves onto its surface for a primary coolant pump.Finite element analyse method was used to analyze sealing performances varying with geometric structure parameters under steady-state conditions.The optimum geometric parameters were presented based on the criterion of getting large film stiffness or opening force while maintaining reasonable leakage.The results show that such a seal is excellent when groove depth to film thickness ratio is from 2.0 to 6.0,groove number is from 8 to 24,groove width is greater than 0.75 mm but less than half of the difference of outer and inner radius,inner circular groove radius is less than half of that difference.
