A Comparative Study of Supporting Old Parents by Sons and Daughters

Xu Qin is Associate Researcher, China Research Center on Ageing.  
This paper examines and compares the role of sons and daughters in supporting their old parents using data from a sample survey conducted in 1994 in Baoding City, Hebei province, onthe elderly and the intergenerational relations. Data show that the proportions of the old parents supported by sons and daughters are similar, whereas the amount of support provided by sons is higher than that by daughters, and the old support function of family depends on the number of children, particularly boys.
