Application of decosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid in infant formula

The roles of two polyunsaturated fa tty acids decosahexaenoic acid(DHA)and arachidonic acid(AA)which natu-rally present in breast milk in infan t growth and development and the importance of their supplement to infant formula in non -breast -fed infants nutrition were i ntroduced.Recommendations of experts panels on supplement of DHA and AA in infant formula and application situation nowadays were also introduced.The two resour ces of DHA and AA,natural resources a nd fermentation through biotechnology,were described.The natural resources of DHA and AA are fish oil and egg yolk,but most i ndustrial DHA and AA are produced by fermentation o f microalga and fungi at present.The production process of DHA and AA by fe rmentation and the safety of fermentation product applied in infant formula were dis cussed.
