The Use and Disuse of Geyi as an Exegetical Principle in the Context of Buddhist Sutra Translations

Ha Lei;
As a kind of exegesis method, geyi(concept-matching), or interpreting Buddhism in Confucian and Taoist terms, facilitated the popularization of Buddhism concepts. However, it also tended to produce interpretations that deviate from the original Buddhist thoughts. With the establishment of "Enclosing and Seeking Truth" proposed by Master Tao'an and others as the exegetical principle, and with the reception of Buddhist terms based on the " āgama ", " Abhidharma " and " Prajā pāramitā-sūtra ", geyi gradually lost its value as an exegetical method in Chinese Buddhism studies.
