Requirement of Prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii for Vitamin C

Prawns Macrobrachium rosenbergii ( mean weight 5.52 ± 1.72g ) were fed respectively with semipurified diets containing 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 mg Lascorbyl2polyphosphate ( LAPP ) per kg dry diet for 9 weeks. Results indicated that prawns fed the diets containing LAPP had significently higher weight gain than those fed the control diet. It was found that the dietary LAPP increased molting frequency and shortened molting cycle. However, the lowest level of 50 mg supplemented LAPP per kg dry diet could meet the need of molting. Hepatopancreatic ascorbate concentrations increased with dietary LAPP levels until it reached 200 mg LAPP per kg dry diet, but hemolymph ascorbate concentration kept on increasing as dietary LAPP levels increased. Nevertheless, it was observed that whole carcass lipid and protein contents were lower than those fed on the LAPP supplemented diets ( P 0.05 ), but hepatopanereas lipid content increased. It is concluded that vitamin C was essential for the growth and molting of the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. LAPP was a good vitamin C source for this prawn and its optimum level in diet for best weight gain analyzed by broken line regression was 111.9 mg/kg dry diet.
