Requirement of Prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii for Vitamin C

Prawns Macrobrachium rosenbergii ( mean weight 5.52 ± 1.72g ) were fed respectively with semipurified diets containing 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 mg Lascorbyl2polyphosphate ( LAPP ) per kg dry diet for 9 weeks. Results indicated that prawns fed the diets containing LAPP had significently higher weight gain than those fed the control diet. It was found that the dietary LAPP increased molting frequency and shortened molting cycle. However, the lowest level of 50 mg supplemented LAPP per kg dry diet could meet the need of molting. Hepatopancreatic ascorbate concentrations increased with dietary LAPP levels until it reached 200 mg LAPP per kg dry diet, but hemolymph ascorbate concentration kept on increasing as dietary LAPP levels increased. Nevertheless, it was observed that whole carcass lipid and protein contents were lower than those fed on the LAPP supplemented diets ( P 0.05 ), but hepatopanereas lipid content increased. It is concluded that vitamin C was essential for the growth and molting of the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. LAPP was a good vitamin C source for this prawn and its optimum level in diet for best weight gain analyzed by broken line regression was 111.9 mg/kg dry diet.
