On Illness as Metaphor of Beijing-style Novel

HAN Leng(Editorial House of Guangdong Social Sciences,Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences,Guangzhou 510610,Guangdong,China)
Disease often becomes a metaphor in literature, and physical and mental morbidity of characters is skillfully fused with morbidity of society. The disease of depression caused by failure in courtship is the most representative disease pattern in Beijing style fiction, and the image of the characters with epilepsy in those fictions can be both realistic and symbolic. Those images with symbolic meaning are the same kind with Tuan Yuan Daughter-in-law in Xiao Hong’s Hulan River,Fan Yi in Thunderstorm by Lei Yu,which criticizes patriarchal clan system oppressing human being’s nature and instinct.
