The Narrative Rhythms in Light in August

ZHANG Li
By exploring the intricately designed fragmentations and disorders in Light in August, readers can figure out and follow the narrative rhythms and manage to build up a new cycle and balance: the consistency lies in the circular motion of the time flow.In addition, the less strict chronological order in this novel seems to give way to the spatial juxtaposition for the sake of aesthetic effect. The artistic and experimental narrative approach makes this time-bound fiction go beyond the temporal confinement and catch a glimpse of the ageless, eternal struggles in the fluidity of human life.
