Protective effect of chitosan oligosaccharide against acute renal failure induced by mercuric chloride

Objective To study the protective effect of chitosan oligosaccharide(COS) against ARF Induced by HgCl2.Methods 18 rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: control group,ARF group and COS pretreated groups.The rabbits were killed at 24h after treatment.The blood and kidney tissue was collected,serum BUN and Cr,renal SOD activities and MDA quantification,renal histopathologic changes and expression of Metallothionein(MT) were observe.Results In the ARF group,the serum levels of Cr and BUN were higher significantly(P0.01),the levels of MDA content were significantly higher and SOD activity was significantly lower than those in the control group(P0.01),the expression of MT in kidney increased little in ARF modle.In the COS group,The serum levels of BUN and Cr was lower significantly,the levels of MDA content were lower and SOD activity were higher than those in the ARF group,What's more,compared with ARF group,the expression of renal MT was higher significantly in COS group.Conclusion The pretreatment with COS can eficiently protect rabbits against HgCl2 induced ARF.
