Effect of Drying Methods on the Properties of Silica Aerogel

Using tetraethoxysilane( TEOS) as the silica source,silica aerogels were synthesized via sol- gel process,measures such as changing solvent and trimethylchlorosilane( TMCS) / hexane modification were adopted. Then Using supercritical drying,ambient drying,eventually get light porous silica aerogels. The structural characteristics and physical properties of the resultant two kinds of aerogels were investigated and compared with the help of infrared spectra( IR),SEM and BET. The results indicated that the infrared spectra of two kinds of sol- gel know the same surface structure,scanning electron microscopy shows uniform parti- cles,using the BET adsorption apparatus know it has large surface area.
