A comparative study of paroxetine and diazepam in the treatment of patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and side effects of paroxetine in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.Methods Fifty six patients who met the criteria of CCMD-3 for generalized anxiety disorder were assigned to paroxetine or diazepam treatment for 4 weeks.The efficacy and side effects were assessed by HAMD,SAS and TESS.Results Paroxetine was similar to diazepam in efficacy,and there was no significant difference between two groups.Both groups showed significant improvement in scores of SAS and HAMA.Two drugs were similar in side effects,and the main side effects of paroxetine were dry mouth,headache,dizziness and nausea.Conclusion Paroxetine was an effective drug with fewer side effects for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.
