Preparation and Mechanical Properties of Fine Grain Al_2O_3-ZrO_2 Composite Ceramics

With TiO2-MgO as sintering aid and polyacrylamide as dispersant aid,ZrO2 nanoparticle(ZrO2(np)) reinforced,ZrO2 fiber(ZrO2(f)) reinforced and ZrO2(np)-ZrO2(f) synergistically reinforced Al2O3 matrix were prepared respectively.Physical mechanical tests,XRD and SEM technique were used to analyze the effects of sintering temperature,addition of ZrO2(np),ZrO2(f) and sintering aids on their relative density,flexural strength,fracture toughness and microstructure.The results show that the sintering temperature is the dominant factor affecting ceramic properties;the toughening is mainly caused by ZrO2(np) rather than ZrO2(f);the distribution of ZrO2(np) in the matrix has intragranular and intergranular patterns.Under the conditions of 5% ZrO2(np),1.0%/0.4% of TiO2/MgO and sintering at 1 600 ℃,the relative density,flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite reach 98.7%,274.82 MPa and 7.32 MPa·m1/2,respectively.

1 (Wang Liwang,)Wang Jiabang,Yang HuiAuthor’s address:Department of Materials Science and Engineering,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310027,ChinaZirconia-toughened Al_2O_3 composite ceramic was prepared using zircon powder and α-Al_2O_3 powder as main starting materials and adding MgO as sintering aids and stabilizer of t-ZrO_2 by in-situ reaction sintering at 1500 ℃ for 4 h,1550 ℃ for 4 h,1600 ℃ for 4 h and 1650 ℃ for 4 h respectively.It was shown that the added MgO had promoted the sintering of the ceramic and increased the content of t-ZrO_2.Meanwhile,MgO had affected resultant phases and inhibited the formation of mullite.In multiphase ceramic with 5wt% ZrO_2 by doping ZrSiO_4,and the addition of MgO accounted for 8% of ZrO_2 addition,the ceramic sintered at 1600 ℃ had the maximum cold MOR of 220 MPa and the fracture toughness of 6.2 MPa·m~(12).;Effect of MgO addition on properties of reaction-sintered ZrO_2-toughened Al_2O_3 multiphase ceramic[J];Refractories;2005-06
