Numerical simulation of sloshing in two dimensional rectangular tanks with SPH

Sloshing in LNG tankers refers to extremely large deformation of the nonlinear free surface. Aiming at the compulsive sloshing of the fluid induced by the motion of containers, a study on the application of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to the simulation of fluid flows in a two dimensional tanker in the surge and pitch motions is presented. The computed free surface elevation at tank boundary is close agreement with the experimental and numerical data available when the tank is under surge excitation. It turns out that when the excitation frequency is closed to the highest natural frequency, the impulse pressure on the tops of the tank and wave breaking appears. In the case of the coupled surge-pitch motion of the tanker, the free surface elevation is smallest when the phase difference is equal to zero and highest when the phase difference is 180 degree.
