The Childhood Complex of Charles Dickens

LI Yuan-yuan (Language Center, Qingdao University, Qingdao 266071, China)
Throughout his writing career, Dickens returns to and reinvents childhood experiences in his fictions. He is expert at adopting the perspective of the child to describe the Victorian society. The childhood complex reflects his own complicated and conflicted childhood, especially the period at Warren's Blacking. In the works his suffering is objectified into generous indignation and righteous anger at the fate of the helpless, the poor, and the unprotected. Dickens has, via a host of suffering, orphaned, abandoned or neglected child figures, made an enormous difference in the way the English culture thinks about children.
