Context Embedding and Construction:A Language-Philosophical Study of Poem Recitations in Zuozhuan

This paper attempts to elucidate the relationship between the source and the target context by analyzing poem recitations of Zuozhuan as a type of direct reported speech and thus to figure out how meaning is generated in the poem recitations.By virtue of constructing a model called the meaning generating triangle,this study finds that there are both similarities and differences between the source and the target context which lead to the embedding(including defamiliarizing) handling of the source context and meanwhile the construction of the target context.Context embedding and construction constitute a basic dimension in the meaning generation of poem recitations in Zuozhuan and a basic topic in the languagephilosophical study of Chinese reported discourse as well.
