Objective: To study the role of nitric oxide(NO) and endothelin(ET) on the left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in the patients with essential hypertension (EH). Methods: The serum ET and NO levels were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and nitric reductive method respectively in 30 cases of EH (observation groupⅠ), 30 cases of normal controls(control group) and 20 cases of patients of EH with LVH (observation groupⅡ) before and after treatment, and correlation analysis was conducted to the results. Results: The serum ET levels in observation groupⅠwas significantly higher than normal controls (P0.01), whereas NO serum level was lower (P0.01); The serum ET levels was higher in observation groupⅡ than that in observation groupⅠ (P0.01), while NO serum levels was lower in observation groupⅡ than that in observation groupⅠ (P0.01). There was a negative correlation between ET and NO (r=-0.586,P0.01), while there was a positive correlation between LVMI and ET (r=0.427,P0.05), and a negative correlation between LVMI and NO (r=-0.653,P0.01). The serum ET levels in observation groupⅡafter treatment was significantly lower than that before treatment (P0.05), whereas NO serum level was higher (P0.01). Conclusions: The ET and NO probably take part in the pathophysiological process of the EH associated LVH.
