L2 Writing in the Framework of Lambrecht

Lambrecht's(1994) theory of information structure is concerned with the relationship between the speaker's assumptions about the addressee's mental states and the formal structure of the sentence,assuming that the structure of a sentence reflects the speaker's assumptions.This paper is an investigation of violations of information structure in L2 writing of Chinese learners of English within this framework,and three types of violations have been found:violation of pragmatic presupposition,violation of cognitive status of discourse referents and violation of topics,all of which result from writers' misjudgment of readers' menual states.To solve this problem,we propose that information structure theory should be covered in classroom L2 writing teaching,and that actual texts should be analyzed to demonstrate information structure of English clauses.
