Review on Evaluation of Compost Maturity and Stability of Solid Waste

Fong Min (Shandong University, Jinan 250100) J. W. C. Wong M. H. Wong (Hongkong Baptist University, Hongkong)
Composting is becoming a more acceptable and economical method of treating solid organic wastes. The end -product can be utilizated as a plant growth medium, if it has reached its maturation and stabilization. It seems impossible to use a single test as a universal index for evaluation of maturity of any types of compost. A combination of several tests including chemical, and biological parameters is required. Nevertheless, C/Norg ratio in aqueous phase, soluble organic carbon, microbial respiration, and seed germination index are relatively more superior than that of other tests as they give more or less constant values when compost reaches stability or maturity.
