Analysis of Cometabolic Biodegradation of Refractory Organic Pollutants

This paper analyzed the cometabolism of refractory organics like trichloroethylene (TCE). The analysis was based on a comprehensive model constructed at both enzymatic and microbial levels. According to the model simulation for high biomass and low biomass, the production of key enzymes was dominated by primary substrate, while overhigh addition of primary substrate would make the cometabolic rate decline due to competitive inhibition. Appropriate addition of energy substrate could stimulate the cometabolism, however, excessive addition of energy substrate would not benefit the active microbes in long-term. In cometabolism, the microbes could take advantage of its self-recovery function to fight against toxic inactivation, thus self-recovery might be a critical factor to be explored.
