Optical Depth Study on Atmospheric Aerosol in Yangtze River Delta Region

Aerosol is an important factor going to affect en vironment and climate. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) is an important physical parameter of atmospheric turbidity. Yangtze River delta is the main agriculture area in China. In recent years, development of industry is very fast, and the environmental problems become gradually important. But now in this area study concerning aerosol is few. The aerosol products from MODIS level 2 have been compared with AOD from sun -photometer observation at Lin'an and the city Air Pollution Index (API) respectively in this area. The result indicated that the MODIS product has enough accuracy to reflect distribution and change of aerosol in this region. In some ways the AOD from the MODIS could represent air pollution. Because the MODIS product has higher resolution, it could become a good method to use for monitoring air pollution and use the average data of MODIS to get distribution of seasonal and monthly AOD in Yangtze River delta region. The result indicated that AOD of this area was higher than the ambient area, and obviously were affected by population density, industrial distribution and geography.
