A Correlation Analysis of Plants for Afforestation between Physico-Chemical Indicators of Leaves and Their Air Cleaning Capacities

On the backside of plant leaves there are many tiny air vents, through which the plants absorb air pollutants whilst taking respiration. Through analysing the physico-chemical indicators, sulphur and nitrogen contents in the leaves of camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora), bull bay (Magnolia grandiflora L.), oleander (Nerium oleander L.), Chinese photinia (Photinia serrulata Lindl.), and etc., the local prevailing vegetations, the effects of absorbing sulphur and nitrogen compounds in the air were studied. It has primarily been revealed that there were marked correlations among pH values of the leaves' cell sap, buffering capacity, and sulphur and nitrogen contents in the leaves. It showed that (1) higher pH value and stronger acidic buffering capacity of the leaves both helped absorbing acidic gases such as SO2, NOx and etc. in the air, (2) camphor tree was the most capable of absorbing the acidic gases and bull bay had the highest capacity to resist the acidic gases.
