Through cross , backcross and multiple cross together with quality evaluation and selection in early progeny, a BT type japonica CMS line Xiushui 04A with high combining ability and good filling ability and a japonica restoring line R161 with high grain quality and 94.42% restoring ability were obtained. Their first filial generation (F 1) “8 you 161”showed strong yielding heterosis and good grain quality. Most indexes of grain quality were up to the new national rice quality standard issued this year. In japonica hybrid breeding, the major characters requisite for CMS line are short stem and good plant type, those for restoring line are good ear traits , and those for their first filial generation (F 1) are moderate panicle number, big panicle ,numerous grains and a certain superiority in vegetative mass as a basis of high yield.
