Comparison of long-term quality of life after laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy

Objective Objective To survey and compare the long-term quality of life in patients who underwent laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy. Methods A reviewed survey was made on 146 patients receiving laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC group) and 132 patients receiving open cholecystectomy (OC group)over 4 years of the operation. The quality of life was assessed with MOS item short form health survey (SF-36) together with gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI). Results SF-36 and GIQLI scores in the aspects concerning social activity and psychic emotion, the LC group showed better scores than the OC group. Conclusions LC is found to be significantly superior to OC with respect to the quality of life over the long-term postoperative follow-up.
