Effects of different electrical conductivity levels of nutrient solution on the growth,yield and quality of endive

Hydroponic experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of six different electrical conductivity(EC) levels of nutrient solution on the plant growth, yield and quality of Endive in this study. The result showed that the application of low EC levels(0.2 and 0.5 ms/cm) significantly inhibited the plant growth and decreased the yield of endive. The application of EC level at 0.8-1.5 ms/cm range can effectively promote the plant growth of endive and obtain higher yield, but the application of high EC level(1.2 and 1.5 ms/cm) treatment resulted in nitrate accumulation in leaves of endive. Taking into account the plant growth,yield and quality of endive, as well as cost of nutrient solution,, this study suggests that the EC level of nutrient solution at 0.8 ms/cm was more suitable for endive hydroponic production.
