To investigate the clinical effects and mechanism of "Nao Kang Liquid" in the treatment of vascular dementia (VD),75 male rats were randomized into group A,group B,group C,group D and group E. Except for group A, the rats in other groups were modeled into chronic low-flow perfusion by ligating their common carotid arteries. From the 3rd day after ligation, the rats in the latter three groups were treated with stomach perfusion of small dose of "Nao Kang Liquid", large dose of "Nao Kang Liquid" and "Nao Fu Kang" respectively.During the treatment, the learning and memorizing abilities were tested by Y-shaped maze.Fifty days later, all rats were sacrificed and the density of mACh-R and the activity of AchE in the brain tissues were assayed. Results:After treatment, the learning and memorizing abilities improved;the content of mACh-R increased and the activity of AchE decreased, with better effects in groups C and D than in group E,group D than group C.It is revealed that "Nao Kang Liquid" can improve the learning and memorizing abilities in low-flow pefusion rats possibly by acting on cerebral cholinergic system.
