A study of time-frequency analysis method on typical vibration signals

Firstly,this paper compares the analytic precision of different time-frequency methods(short-time Fourier transform,Wigner Distribution,Hilbert time-frequency spectrum and continuous wavelet transform) for two simple signals——a mono-component signal and a multi-component signal.The results indicate that the precision of Hilbert time-frequency spectrum is the best,the one of the WD and STFT is second,and the one of the wavelet transform is not so good.Although Hilbert method and WD are accurate,they can be used only when the signal is mono-component or can be decomposed to a series of mono-components,otherwise the result may be false or inaccurate.When using STFT,the right window parameter must be chosen.If the window parameter is chosen inappropriately,the analytic precision may become worse.Secondly,in this paper the time-frequency distributions of two horizontal components of 1940 El Centro seismic wave and two man-made seismic waves are analysed by STFT and continuous wavelet transform.Although time resolution and frequency resolution of STFT is inconsistent,the adaptability of STFT for complicated signals is the best.Its precision of the time-frequency analysis is satisfied generally even if the signal is multi-component or complicated.The time and frequency resolutions of continuous wavelet transform are of imperfection,and its analytic precision become worse and worse when the signal frequency become higher and higher.The results indicate that the continuous wavelet transform is not appropriate for time-frequency analysis,and the time-frequency spectrums of wavelet seem rough and are difficult to interpret.Finally,this paper compares the time-frequency spectra of the genuine seismic waves and the man-made seismic wave. The results are shown that the time-frequency spectra of the seismic waves and ones of the man-made seismic waves are similar.
