Effect of clay on liquefaction of loess in Gansu

Loess in Gansu is a kind of soil with both properties of sand and clay. It has some characteristics of sand, but at the same time acts like clay in case of its weak cementation. Based on dynamic triaxial test, particle analysis, chemical analysis and SEM study on loess, it is proved that: (1) gradation of loess has certain effect on dynamic stability of loess; (2) liquefaction resistance of loess does not simply increases with increase of clay content. Disregard of confining stress,the liquefaction resistance of loess is the lowest at 15% of clay content; (3) under certain clay content, pore water pressure ratio is the highest.
