Effect of Rare Earth Elements on the Structure and Properties of Boriding Layer for Steel 45

The effect of rare earth elements on the structure and properties of the boriding layer for steel 45 was studied. The result shows that the rare earth elements can promote the formation of phase FeB, coarsen the needle of Fe_2B and increase the thickness of the boride layer and the diffusing zone under the condition of tests. Moreover, the rare earth elements are micro-alloying elements; they can improve the brittleness of boriding layer, while they increase the wear resistance of boriding layer greatly.
